Quelab 3.0 Progress

Summer 2024 saw Quelab being forced to move to a new location.  As of October 2024, that new building has been found, purchased, and renovations are underway.

December 1, 2024

CURRENT STATUS

  1. INSURANCE: We finally seem to be making some progress here. We have a broker who says she has several companies who want to insure us. With luck we will have policies in place soon.
  2. ELECTRICAL: Progress continues in the overall building. Despite a very short holiday week they finished the main corridor lighting finally. Bill has worked with Adam and will start wiring for the CNC router shortly.
  3. HVAC: With the holiday we have not received the ordered HVAC but it should be here shortly. Expect heating and cooling for a portion of the building (east wing) withing a week or so.
  4. SECURITY: Adam Ivey has finished the Fire Monitoring/alarm system. With luck we may get our fire alarm permit the first week of December.
  5. CONSTRUCTION: Illness and other conflicts slowed the construction efforts but most of the electrician’s holes have been patched and are waiting painting. Last week we power washed the north and east sides of the building and what a difference.
  6. OVERCROWDING: We continue trying to clear rooms of all extraneous items as we work to clean up the building. The de-cluttering committee is awaiting a steward meeting to make final room determinations and just what is clutter.
  7. FINANCES: This continues to a closely watched constraint on our activities. Some more members have stepped up with loans to Quelab that give us a lot more flexibility and relief.

PROJECTIONS

  1. We still cannot make a projection as to full opening of Quelab because of the insurance and HVAC issues. We are working these issues as aggressively as possible.
  2. The ventilation issue for the laser cutter has been solved We are waiting for Craig to make some determinations before we fully cut out the vent and install the blower. The proposed solution will accommodate 2 laser cutters and a 3d resin printer.
  3. This week the emphasis will be on continuing the intensive clean-up of all areas. Workers will continue to scrub floors, wipe off tables and clean each room as much as possible. Work will proceed to finish the 2nd floor with the exception of the wood and machine shops. The workers will continue patching holes left by the electricians and painting patches and trim. More clean-ups including recycling runs will be done on the parking lots.
  4. Aaron Birenboim has started to manufacture and install steel security bars on doors and windows. We will also start painting the stucco exterior on the north and east sides.
  5. For security, insurance and access issues, the Board will be enforcing our by-laws requirement to have a current photo (not avatar), address, phone number and emergency contact on file. Everyone will also be required to annually SIGN a copy of our waiver. We will start documenting these.
  6. Depending on #1 above we hope to start orientations for stewards and existing members the 1st or 2nd of December.

If anyone has questions, I am available at any time via phone or email.
